London-based design studio Doshi Levien’s latest offering in collaboration with Italian furniture manufacturer Moroso is the Chandigarh sofa collection. Chandigarh pays homage to Le Corbusier’s architecture in the Indian city.
Chandigarh, also known as The City Beautiful, 180 miles north of Delhi was designed and built by renowned modernist architect Le Corbusier in Punjab 60 years ago as a bid to show India’s move to modernity.
“For us the Chandigarh sofa is the coming together of modernity, sensuality, graphics and eccentric qualities” said the design couple Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien.
The Chandigarh sofa is soft and comfortable yet at the same time compact, visually slim and lightweight. The seat is in moulded foam and rests on a frame in iron like a precious stone set in a ring.
Upholstered in a choice of leather or fabric with a printed pattern designed by Doshi & Levien which pays homage to the memory of the city of Chandigarh.
Chandigarh was also presented during Milan design week at Salone del Mobile 2012.
