Spanish collective Mut Design Studio + Atelier presented Drops, a concrete tile concept for Valencia-based manufacturer Entic Designs at Salone del Satellite 2012.
The geometric motif is a depiction of a Japanese pond as raindrops fall on the water’s surface. Four styles – one only with the circular droplet pattern, and the others with gold fish, lotus plants and water lilies – fit together to create a variety of combinations depending on the direction and placement of the individual pieces.
Made as an encaustic tile, all the blocks of colour are placed separately and have depth, ensuring that the design does not wear with time as is the case with the painted variety. The entire structure of the product is 2 cm (0.8 inches) thick.
Due to the composition of the tile, no baking is necessary; the tiles harden without heat.
